Southeast Asia is a region of extraordinary diversity, from the temples of Myanmar to the beaches of Bali. Yet the logistics of travelling here can catch the unorganised off guard. Before you pack a single linen shirt, make sure these three essentials are properly covered.
1. The Right Travel Insurance
It sounds obvious, but many travellers skimp on insurance or lean on the basic cover bundled with a credit card, which is rarely sufficient across Asia. You want a policy that covers medical evacuation and, crucially, motorbike accidents if you intend to ride and are licensed. Care in the region's international hospitals is excellent, but it is priced accordingly, and a serious claim without cover can dwarf the cost of the holiday itself.
2. Visa Requirements
Visa rules in Southeast Asia evolve constantly. Thailand may offer a visa exemption while Indonesia requires a Visa on Arrival, and the terms can change between one visit and the next. Never assume the rules are what they were last year. Before you travel, cross-check your itinerary against the current government travel advice for each country, which is updated regularly and lists entry requirements alongside any safety notes worth knowing.
3. Cash Is Still King
While the digital-nomad cafes of Canggu will happily take a tap of your phone, much of the region still runs on cash. Street-food vendors, local transport and the small entrance fees at temples all expect local currency, ideally in modest notes. Relying entirely on cards will, sooner or later, leave you stranded in front of someone who simply cannot take one. Carry a sensible mix, keep some separate from your wallet, and you will glide through the small transactions that make up a day.
Travel Light, Plan Heavy
None of this is glamorous, which is precisely why it is so often neglected. The paradox of a truly relaxed trip is that it is built on a little dull preparation. Sort the insurance, confirm the visa and carry the cash, and everything downstream, the long lunches and the unplanned detours, is free to unfold exactly as it should.
